The Kitty That Could

The life of a kitty is hard – no one knows that better than a cat. See what a cat could do while she is planning to attack her enemy.

The Kitty That Could

“I could” thought the kitty “attack that raven now.”

The kitty was sitting on the balcony, the raven it thought about attacking was sitting on a tree in front of it. The jump would have been about three meters and a little bit down – something that the kitty could do. The raven had been annoying for weeks now, just sitting in the tree and watching the balcony where she sat, cawing from time to time. It had been bugging the little kitty in a way she couldn’t quite understand. Unfortunately, the raven was the only interesting thing that was happening. A while ago the trees had lost their leaves and since then basically all the birds and other animals that make the garden in front of the balcony interesting were gone. The raven was the only thing that remained in the garden and it had been sitting on the leafless tree watching the kitty, cawing from time to time.

The kitty made an attempt at the raven but was stopped by a net. The net was put there to keep her from falling off the balcony but right now it also kept her from attacking her worst enemy.

“I could climb the net, it wouldn’t be that hard.”

She had climbed the net before, so the kitty knew she could. Her human staff kept saying she wasn’t supposed to but after all she was a kitty and those were not supposed to be kept from doing anything.

“Yeah, I could climb the net and then jump in the tree and then attack the raven – it will never see me coming”, she thought, looking at the raven more closely.

Her sister jumped up next to her and also looked at the raven. The raven cawed again and the kitties meowed at him.

“We could also attack together”, the kitty thought looking at her sister. Both watched the winged enemy closely, considering his every move to not be surprised. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to watch because except for his occasional cawing there wasn’t much movement coming from the raven.

“I could also get inside and eat something”, thought the kitty while trying to remember when she had her last meal. It must have been ages – at least 20 minutes or so. She felt like starving and the more she thought about it the more it was like starving to death. Her human staff could come outside and offer her some treats but good staff was hard to come by. Furthermore, the staff was sitting at that grey box she was always sitting at and seemed to hardly notice her struggles.

“I could go over there and meow loudly, it would startle her and she would notice my suffering.”

Just as she was about to jump down from the table, the raven did something – it flapped its wings and seemed to be ready to become mildly interesting again. The kitty focused on its enemy, forgetting the close-to-death-starving she had suffered only seconds before. At that moment the clouds parted a little and let some beams of sunlight through that shone directly on the balcony and on the kitty.

“I could be God” she thought, illuminated by the light. For a moment there she was certain about it until sunlight also fell on her sister who was occupied by grooming herself.

“Maybe I am not God, but that is fine, as long as I am treated like one.”

The raven cawed again reminding the kitty of her initial target. Her sister beside her jumped off the table and onto a chair next to it which was also in the sunlight. She seemed to have lost all interest in the target but the kitty was still laser focused. With her sister asleep the attack plan for both of them was off the table but there was still an enemy to fight off. While she stared at the raven the raven did – nothing. For a while they were back at staring at each other again. In the background the kitty heard her staff turning on water and turned around to look inside her home.

“I could play with the water”, she thought but wasn’t really willing to give up her sun spot.

“I could also let it be”, thought the kitty, looking at her sister that had rolled up on the chair next to her. She was already dozing in the first warm sun beams of the spring. Soon the leaves would come out and the birds would come back. The raven would be gone by then and the kitty would have won.

“I could also doze off a little”, thought the kitty, envying her sister that had already come to that state. The sun had gotten a little warmer touching her little pink nose.

“I could roll up and then just wait”, the kitty thought on, while already rolling her little body up, resting herself in the sun rays close to her sister.

“Yeah, that sounds right – I could nap and still win against that vicious raven”.

The raven cawed again but the kitty already didn’t care anymore.

“I will win”, was her last thought, as she was finally dozing off. And then she dreamed about attacking the raven and about food and about spring.
